Dates: July 2-13, 2018

Two-week training: $130 for YMCA Members/$160 for Community Members*

Please contact Zak Padayao for more information about this program.

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties Counselors-in-Training (CIT) program is a progressive, experiential, education course designed to help young people develop their awareness and basic skills of youth work leadership and enhanced with an intentional leadership development design.  This workforce development curricula is designed to develop the people and technical skills necessary to be an effective, competent and compassionate youth-worker, possessing all of the core competencies the YMCA recognizes are vital to success as a counselor in either a YMCA Day Camp or our Y After School Setting.

While it is not “working” at camp in the same sense as a staff member, as a CIT, participants are still technically a youth participant and therefore bound by many of the same rules and restrictions as regular campers.  CIT is a training program that teaches leadership skills.  CITs are not paid and they are not guaranteed a staff position at the completion of the program.

The YMCA’s CIT program teaches management and leadership skills, providing basic training in such areas as child abuse prevention, time management, curriculum development.  The CIT curriculum exposes participants to all of the same training that YMCA counselors must go through, and if possible, more training.  Participants will alternate between hands-on experiences working with a specific age-group or shadowing adult counselors and classroom and learning-based experiences including group discussing, panels, workshops, and lectures.  Participation in CIT programs can lead to leadership opportunities at school, the YMCA, in extracurricular activities and employment opportunities.

*PLEASE NOTE: Lunch is not provided at camp. Please send your child to camp with a bagged lunch and TWO snacks to enjoy thoughout the day.

Interested in Overnight Camp?

For more 110 years area youth have been calling YMCA Camp Seymour their summer home. Camping, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community as they learn both how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group as they engage in physical, social and educational activities.
