Active Older Adult Fitness


The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties offers a tremendous variety of fitness classes for Active Older Adults. All classes are included in your YMCA membership and available on a drop in basis. See Schedules for class times.

Stretch and Stability
Focus on balance, flexibility and core strength. All levels welcome.

Chair Yoga
Yoga modified in a chair for 30 minutes. Designed to help with flexibility, balance and relaxation.

Circuit Training
This intense, high energy class features 6 to 8 stations of cardiovascular, muscle endurance and flexibility exercises.

Core and More
First 30 minutes focus on core strengthening exercises for your abdomen and back to improve posture. The second half hour of class focuses on strengthening other various muscle groups.

Core Yoga
A combination of core conditioning and yoga emphasized through movements and postures that develop strength, flexibility and balance. The beginning segment will focus on the stabilization and strenthening of the core, or the body's "powerhouse."

Cycling
Not a lot of choreography, just a lot of fun during this great non-impact workout. A water bottle is required. Please arrive at least five minutes early.

Family Circuit
Bring your family and join us for a Circuit Training clss, designed for ages 5 and up (parent must accompany child to clsss). This class runs Sept to June during session weeks.

Gentle Yoga
Designed for those who prefer a slower, gentler and more meditative approach to their practice. This class is excellent for beginners, but great for all levels.

Healthy Joints
In partnership with The Arthritic Foundation, this class is designed to maintain and increase the range of motion in joints, strengthen muscles and condition the body in overall fitness while in the water.

Kickboxing
This class utilizes martial arts and boxing skills to tone and sculpt your body. Fun circuits and drills add variety to the workout. Hand wraps are recommended.

Low-Impact Cardio
This class includes cardiovascular exercise, strength and stretching.

Pilates
A conditioning mat work class designed to stretch and strengthen your body. The exercises coordinate breathing and movement while you work against the resistance of your own body weight to improve your core strength.

Spoga
This class combines Spin (cycling) and Yoga for a great cardio workout followed by a great way to strengthen and stretch. First 30 minutes will be cycling, second 30 minutes is Yoga.

Step Aerobics
This class contains all the elements of a good step workout, with basic high or low intesity, and challenging choreography. The numbers associated with the class (101,102,103) indicate the difficulty level based on choreography used for the step portion. It does not indicate instesity level. All classes are designed to accommodate any level of fitness, but more difficult step moves (and more of them) are incorporated in the higher numbered classes.

Total Body Circuit
This class uses Cybex and Cardio equipment and other functional and abdominal exercises for a total body toning and strenthening workout.

Yoga
A mind-body class that takes physical and mental well-being to another level. Strenthen and stretch your body in a caring and quiet enrironment. Classes are designed to accommodate everyone. Mats are provided.

Zumba Gold
This Latin, dance based cardio workout is designed for active older adults, true beginners, people who are limited physically or people who aren't used to exercising. It features aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.

Tai Chi
Tai Chi generates and circulates vital energy around the body by following certain principles of movement, posture and breathing. It improves the circulation of blood and brings about a balance of "chi‟ (vital energy) around the body. Tai Chi opens joints, relaxes muscles, flexes tendons and ligaments, eases tension, strengthens and energizes the organs, resulting in a healthier body and a stage of relaxation.

Tai Chi 101
This is a 30 minute introductory class in the art of Tai Chi. Believed to improve circulation and assist with balance.

Zumba Basic Training
Dance your way to a healthier you while learning the basics of Zumba. This is a 35 minute class.

Silver Sneakers Cardio Circuit
Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

Silver Sneakers Muscular Strength and Range of Motion
Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resis-tance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.
