YMCA Camp Seymour is seeking a Waterfront Director to actively supervise and maintain safe, enjoyable, age-appropriate waterfront programs and events, supervise dock lifeguards and instructors, provide progressive instruction in waterfront classes, and work with AD staff and Camp Director to organize and implement overall camp program.

  • Be a camp resource, to create meaningful experiences for campers and staff. 
  • Work proactively with individuals and groups each day showing spontaneity & creativity.
  • Balance camp standards and expectations with flexibility to create a safe environment while seizing opportunities to create unique experiences.
  • Manage stress and use positive techniques for reducing stress. To respond quickly and effectively to situations, including emergencies.
  • Be a supportive, constructive member of our camp community actively working to create a positive and quality experience for all campers and staff.
  • Devotion to ensuring the safety and growth of campers and staff.

Staff Development

  • Take active leadership role in staff orientation; co-lead a Family Group.
  • Supervision of staff instructors will include coaching, teaching, modeling, reinforcing, and correcting behavior.  Establishing, communicating and positively reinforcing performance standards for staff.
  • Maintain weekly observations on staff performance; give staff positive and constructive feedback; communicate significant observations to direct supervisors.
  • Listen to staff ideas; with AD Staff and Camp Director actively work to improve the all camp program and camp culture.
  • Make a conscious effort to get to know staff as individuals: interests, working style, strengths, areas for improvement.

Staff and Volunteer Relations

  • Maintain open communication and proactively work to build strong relationships with all staff.
  • Be accessible and available to staff; let staff (post) know where to find you.
  • Develop and maintain expectations and systems for reserving dock use (trips, ceremonies, Day Camp).

Camper and Parent Satisfaction

  • Help campers who need extra support.
  • Alert maintenance if repairs are necessary.
  • Assist with check in and check out at registration, Health Center, pool, or along cabin line.

 Program Delivery

  • Plan, organize, and facilitate waterfront Camptivities.
  • Organize and maintain dock area & boathouse.
  • Coordinate weekly 'Whale Swim'
  • Work with AD Staff & all staff to coordinate and implement overall camp program.
  • Add creativity and variety to the camp program, with the help of all staff.
  • Assume On Duty responsibilities two times a week: run meal times, assist in camp store, supervise Dippy & German Stairs, make snack and Night Watch break rounds through cabin line, and lock up camp at night.
  • Assume an active and supportive role with Theme Days.
  • Monitor dock equipment and supplies, resupply as necessary.
  • Remain flexible with daily schedule to assist with cabin coverage and programming.
  • Lifeguard or assume Lookout responsibilities at Key Peninsula Open Swim and Lessons.
  • Assist Day Camp when they visit Camp Seymour.

Job Knowledge/Initiative

  • Will provide 1st aid and CPR if necessary and compliant with level of training.
  • In an emergency, initiate the Emergency Management Plan and assume a lead role.
  • Develop a working knowledge, and oversee compliance, of applicable ACA standards.
  • Create a resource for the next Waterfront Director to aid in smooth program transition and development.

Punctuality

  • Attend all staff, AD staff and other meetings as necessary and on time.
  • Return from time off, prepared to join the program and work with kids, when expected.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 19 years of age.
  • One season related aquatic experience, documented waterfront experience or certification, and basic experience in instructional boating.
  • Specialized and practical knowledge of/ experience in: typical summer camp boating programs, child behavior, peer leadership and supervision; staff management & motivation.
  • Current 1st aid & CPR, lifeguarding cert for duration of the season.  Small craft safety certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, organization, and a commitment to serve youth.
  • Human relation skills: Ability to train, motivate, support, share insights & ideas with, and supervise staff guards and instructors; communicate openly with supervisor; organize, facilitate, and evaluate activities; support and connect with campers; perform duties as specified in job description and by supervisor; behave as an appropriate positive role model in all camp activities.
