Salary:  $250-280 per week, dependent on experience

Positions open until filled; positions are Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, Unit 4, Adventurers, Trek, and Pioneers

YMCA Camp Seymour is seeking Unit Leaders for the 2012 Summer season to directly supervise, support, and mentor a group of 8-12 cabin staff. The Unit Leader works with the Camp Director to organize & implement overall camp program and provides a quality experience to campers & families focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.  Represents the YMCA and self in a professional manner of safety and fun.

Key Responsibilities


• Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and our YMCA values.
• Uphold, model, and enforce camp policies, personnel policies and code of conduct.
• Model the values and philosophy of Seymour with campers, parents, and other staff in a positive and professional manner consistent with the personnel policies and mission of Camp Seymour.
• Connect with each camper quickly, and make campers feel welcome and included.  Treat every camper fairly and equally regardless of circumstances and abilities, making each feel good about themselves and encouraging a fun environment.
• Devotion to ensuring the safety and growth of campers. Accentuate positive attributes nurturing the whole; physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally.  Give praise for effort.
• Participate 100% with activities; enjoy playing, and not "sit on the sidelines." 
• Seek out and use camp resources, to create meaningful experiences for campers. 
• Work proactively with individuals and groups each day showing spontaneity & creativity.
• Recognize individual and group situations and effectively resolve conflicts based on camp values and procedures.
• Balance camp standards and expectations with flexibility to create a safe environment while seizing opportunities to create unique experiences.
• Be a supportive, constructive member of our camp community actively working to create a positive and quality experience for all campers and staff.

Unit Leader Responsibilities:

  • Support cabin staff - assisting with cabin leadership and challenging campers.
  • Maintain open communication and proactively work to build strong relationships with Staff Team and Camp Director. 
  • Be accessible and available to your staff; let staff (post) know where to find you.
  • Help campers who need extra support.
  • Partner with Parents through phone communication if their child is having difficulties or returning calls.
  • Be visible and around camp during transition times to assist where needed and supervise campers.
  • Assist with check in and check out at registration, Health Center, pool, or along cabin line.
  • Take active leadership role in staff orientation; co-lead a Family Group.
  • Supervision of staff will include coaching, teaching, modeling, reinforcing, and correcting behavior.  Establishing, communicating and positively reinforcing performance standards for staff.
  • Maintain weekly observations on staff performance; give staff positive and constructive feedback.
  • Conduct a mid-summer and end of summer evaluation with 8-12 cabin leaders. 
  • Listen to staff ideas; with AD Staff and Camp Director actively work to improve the all camp program and camp culture.
  • Make a conscious effort to get to know staff as individuals: interests, working style, strengths, areas for improvement.
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate unit and camp programs.
  • Work with AD Staff & all staff to coordinate and implement overall camp program.
  • Schedule staff time off, overnights, and cabin coverage.
  • Visit cabin overnights and help with getting gear to Outback.
  • Assume On Duty responsibilities two times a week: run meal times, assist in camp store, supervise Dippy & German Stairs, make snack and Night Watch break rounds through cabin line, and lock up camp at night. 
  • Assume an active and supportive role with Theme Days.
  • Lifeguard or assume Lookout responsibilities at Key Peninsula Open Swim and Lessons.

• Pioneer Unit Leader – Specific Responsibilities:

  • Create and distribute a Pioneer Unit schedule with daily time-offs for each staff.
  • Coordinate, support, and arrange coverage for special Pioneer Activities.
  • Coordinate and run Wednesday Pioneer check out and check in.

Adventure Unit Leader – Specific Responsibilities:

  • Create and distribute an Adventure Unit schedule with complete weekend programming, daily time-offs for each staff, and 24-hours off for each staff.
  • Assume On Duty responsibilities over the weekend in camp.
  • Liaison with the Trip Shed, Kitchen, and program area directors with regards to trip needs. 
  • Go on an Adventure Trip! Follow guidelines for off-camp trips as explained in the Adventure Manual.

Safety:

  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Know the location of the first aid kit, nearest phone, and incident reports.  Current certification in CPR and First Aid preferred.
  • Provide 1st aid and CPR if necessary and compliant with level of training.
  • In an emergency, initiate the Emergency Management Plan and assume a lead role.
  • Assist Camp Medic as needed and available.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 20 years of age.
  • Two summers previous camp staff experience or equivalent.
  • Specialized and practical knowledge of/ experience in: cabin leadership, child behavior, peer leadership and supervision; staff management & motivation.
  • Current 1st aid & CPR for duration of the season strongly preferred.  Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Integrity, patience, adaptability, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and a commitment to serve youth.
  • Human relation skills: Ability to train, motivate, support, share insights & ideas with, and supervise resident camp staff; communicate openly with supervisor; organize, facilitate, and evaluate camp, unit, and other activities; support and connect with campers; perform duties as specified in job description and by supervisor; behave as an appropriate positive role model in all camp activities.
