Announcement:
Applicant must have the ability to teach and lead visiting 4th through 6th grade school children classes in natural sciences, outdoor skills, and group building initiatives. We are looking for staff members who are excited about working with children in an outdoor setting. You must be caring, creative, flexible and willing to work long hours while keeping a positive work attitude. YMCA Camp Seymour is located on Glen Cove on Puget Sound with 160 acres of Northwest forest and a half a mile of salt-water beach habitat. Classes offered to students include: marine science, reptiles, group initiatives, forest ecology, wildlife ecology, sustainability and the Living Machine, canoeing, orienteering and many more. Duties include teaching classes and implementing fun and exciting evening programs, hosting meals and some weekend responsibilities. Training will be provided in all aspects of the curriculum, program activities and emergency response. Paid internships also available.
General Function:
Responsible for creating a safe educational environment for the purpose of teaching environmental education and an appreciation for the natural world.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and teach natural science, group building, and outdoor skills classes to school groups.
- Participate in or direct educational and recreational activities as needed, including waterfront areas and evening activities.
- Actively work to achieve a quality educational experience for all program participants and staff in line with the goals of the Outdoor and Environmental Education Program.
- Maintain the cleanliness and general upkeep of the Environmental Center and other camp areas as needed.
- Develop activities, curriculum, program materials, and displays to enhance the Outdoor and Environmental Education program.
- Attend and participate in Outdoor and Environmental Education staff meetings.
- Communicate the OEE philosophy to administrators, teachers, school staff, and campers.
- Provide input for the development of promotional materials, flyers, brochures, class visitations, etc.
- Assist in weekend programs as directed.
Qualifications
- College degree or 3 years experience in related field desired.
- A working knowledge of Outdoor and Environmental Education principles through education or practical experience.
- Experience in leading elementary-aged children in classes and program activities in or out of a camp setting.
- Open to working with people of different racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- First Aid, CPRO required. Lifesaving certificate preferred. Life-guarding and Small Craft certifications a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to walk at a sustained pace uphill for twenty minutes.
- Must be able to lift fifty pounds to waist height.
- Must be able to communicate fluently in English.
- Must be able to communicate and respond to both visual and oral communication.
- Must be able to live on-site with a roommate of the same gender.
- Must be able to facilitate groups in the dark.
- Must be able to work long hours while maintaining a positive attitude.
