Culinary arts class

Diabetes Prevention Program
This 16-week program works to decrease the risk of diabetes through education, increased activity and improved nutrition. This program is based on the Diabetes Prevention Program, a national study which successfully demonstrated that lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) can prevent diabetes. Risk factors for diabetes include:- Being overweight or obese (i.e., BMI of 25 or higher)
- First-degree family history of diabetes
- Being age 45 or older
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Low HDL Cholesterol (35 mg/dl; 0.09 mmol/l) and high triglycerides (250 mg/dl;2.82 mmol/l)
- High blood pressure (consistent reading of 140/90mmHg or higher)
- History of gestational diabetes or gave birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
- Belonging to one of the following ethnic populations: African Americans, Native American Indians, Latinos, Asian, Americans, and Pacific Islanders
- Having polycystic ovary syndrome
- (PCOS)
- Having a history of vascular disease

$100 for Members
$150 for Non-Members

EXERCISE AND THRIVE
The Exercise and Thrive Program consists of a 12 week strength and conditioning program with exercises specifically designed by experts to fit the needs of cancer survivors. Every September, the Gig Harbor Family YMCA hosts awareness, health and well-being events for older adults and their families as a part of Fall Prevention Week and in partnership with the Fall Prevention Coalition. Journey to Freedom
Find hope, health, and healing in spirit, mind, and body by connecting with God and others to address many of life’s challenges including: loneliness, depression, grief, loss, stress, substance abuse, financial difficulties, weight loss, eating disorders, marital strife, or family problems. Journey to Freedom provides support, confidentiality, accountability, fulfillment, and relief.
